- Nike and Politics - Colin Kaepernick became the face of the new Nike campaign and it exploded. Earlier in the year the 49ers football player knelt during the national anthem before a game to make a statement about the current political situation. Nike choosing Kaepernick is Nike making a political statement. Advertising is no longer separate from the current issues. https://www.newyorker.com/news/daily-comment/behind-nikes-decision-to-stand-by-colin-kaepernick
- Advertising Campaigns and Social Issues - Ad campaigns are successful and viral when they address current social issues, here is an example of one of the best ad campaigns to date that went viral when it was released. https://www.dove.com/ca/en/stories/campaigns.html
- Advertising has gotten so targeted that there has been talk about whether or not our phones ar listening to us. People aren't sure if it's true or if their privacy is being infringed upon. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/phone-listening-facebook-google-ads/
I am most interested and passionate about campaigns that address social issues and that go viral. Advertisers have an opportunity to really make a statement if the client allows it and can not only make work that goes viral but make art that is meaningful.
When it comes to your first question, I've been interested by how integrated people's personal opinions have become with their jobs. We tear down so many professional lives on the basis of opinion, when I think we should be able to separate the two (especially when it's not anything criminal). People are getting fired for voicing so many different opinions- even though I don't agree with Kaepernick, I think that's wrong.
ReplyDeleteI think your interest in campaigns that address social issues and that go viral fits brilliantly with concepts we have learned in class. One route you could take is brave new worlds. People have been voicing their opinion for a long time, but to do it through mass media in a way such that Nike did was something that hadn't necessary been done with such a hot topic.
ReplyDeleteThis was a really great contest and hopefully I can attend the next one. It was alot of fun and I really enjoyed myself.. ad Ruby
